I over hundre år har vår industrielle og moderne utvikling vært avhengig av fossil energi. Oljealderen fikk ekstra fart etter oljekrisen i 1972, og har gitt Norge en økonomi vi ikke kunne drømme om for 50 år siden. Dessverre er det også så mange skjulte kostnader og farlige bivirkninger at fortsatt bruk vil kunne true menneskehetens eksistens.

Olje er blitt det moderne samfunns rusmiddel, og vi har gjort oss avhengige. Det har lenge vært på tide med avvenning, men å bekjempe avhengighet er vanskelig. Vi må innse at langvarig bruk av olje er farlig. Neste skritt er å effektivisere og redusere energibruk, og raskt bygge ut nye energiformer uten oljens ulemper. Framtiden trenger råvare-ressurser som olje til ting vi ikke engang kan drømme om i dag. Det er uansvarlig bare å brenne den opp. I noen tiår har det vært klart at overgangen til et bærekraftig samfunn burde vært igangsatt i stor stil. Hadde man begynt å redusere bruken av olje da denne innsikten ble klar for oss, ville vi hatt en mykere tilpasning. Nå er våre samfunn langt på overtid i forurensning, og tegnene på en kommende katastrofe blir tydeligere. Oljealderen må avvikles over de neste 20 årene! Det er fire viktige problemområder:
Miljøforurensning
Kull og olje inneholder kjemikalier og partikler som skader helse og miljø. Vi frigjør for eksempel karbon, nitrøse gasser og svovel i store mengder. Oljesøl og utslipp til luft har alvorlige og langvarige, giftige effekter på miljøet. Fossil energi har mange skjulte kostnader. Tas miljøskader og klimaendringer med i det totale regnskapet, er ikke fossile energikilder lenger lønnsomme. Det Internasjonale Pengefondet (IMF) har beregnet at de årlige subsidiene til verdens fossilindustri er ca USD 2 trillioner.
Ikke-fornybare, begrensede ressurser og sårbare samfunn
Fossil energi er en begrenset ressurs. Vi bruker de lettest tilgjengelige kildene først, og blir avhengige. For å dekke etterspørselen, må man lete etter mindre tilgjengelige kilder. Det koster mellom 30 og 50 kroner å utvinne ett fat olje fra de gamle, store oljekildene i Nordsjøen, Saudi-Arabia, Texas og Baku. Prisen på det samme fatet fra en marginal kilde som eksempelvis i Barentshavet koster fort det tidobbelte eller mer. Fortjenestemarginene på ukonvensjonelle, vanskelige kilder synker raskt. Når de gamle kildene tømmes, vil oljeinntektene til land som Norge synke og kostnadene stige. Derfor er olje-industrien en «solnedgangsindustri». Internasjonal oljehandel trenger de marginale, ukonvensjonelle oljekildene som tjæresands-olje og dyre kilder i vanskelige områder for å dekke etterspørselen og holde systemet gående. Oljehandelen er et globalt system som er avhengig av store subsidier. I følge Det Internasjonale Energibyrået (IEA), Det Internasjonale Pengefondet (IMF) og World Resources Institute (WRI), mottar oljeindustrien globalt mellom 500 milliarder og 2000 milliarder dollar årlig, alt etter hvilke faktorer som inkluderes. Med skatteletter, statsgarantier og andre støtteordninger som oljeindustrien får, har utviklingen av fornybare energikilder vanskelige vilkår i konkurransen. Profitten til personer som kontrollerer eldre og billige oljebrønner er allerede svimlende, og de er villige til nesten hva som helst for å holde det gående i enda noen år. Det er uansvarlig å la overoptimistiske særhensyn til oljeindustrien bestemme framtiden. Subsidiene må flyttes over til «soloppgang-industrien»: fornybare energikilder, hvor miljøskadene er små, effektiviteten øker og kostnadene minsker.
Sårbar logistikk, flyktige priser og ujevn geografisk fordeling
De store reservene av billig råolje er konsentrert i Midtøsten, gamle «Sovjet-land» og Afrika. Her styrer “Big Oil”- direktører i tett forbindelse med korrupte og fanatiske regimer eller personer med egne agendaer. Over halvparten av de globale oljeinntektene går til slike regimer. Karbonsamfunnet er avhengig av jevn levering, og er sårbart for ukontrollerte prissvingninger. Våre samfunn styres i dag av grupperinger som “Big Oil”, “karbon-baroner” og “petro-tyranner”. Enorme opphopninger av kapital hos korrupte enkeltpersoner og udemokratiske regimer skaper voldelige konflikter som truer demokratiske styresett og gir stadig nye økonomiske kriser. CO2- utslipp og klimaendringer
Verdens mest anerkjente klimaforskere har påvist global oppvarming i luft, land og hav. Stigende temperaturer, økning i havnivået, reduksjon i bre-is og snødekke, varmere hav og havforsuring er blant symptomene. Våre klimasystemer er allerede i endring, noe som gir mer uforutsigbart vær, ekstremvær som stormer, tørke, mer tung snø i vintersesongene, femtiårsflommer hvert femte år, skogbranner og ulike vanskeligheter for landbruket. Samfunnets sårbarhet øker raskt uten massiv utvikling av alternative energikilder. Fortsatt langvarig bruk av fossilt brensel er dypt uetisk, truer livet på jorden og er på sikt økonomisk ødeleggende. Alle mennesker må delta i arbeidet for en overgang til fornybare og bærekraftige samfunn, og det må starte umiddelbart! I følge Verdensbankens Sir Nicholas Sterns rapporter om klimaendringer og økonomi, blir det voldsomt mye dyrere jo lenger vi utsetter omstillingen. Det er politisk uansvarlig og uetisk ikke å bygge ut alternative og fornybare kilder raskt. Det er meningsløst å la skattebetalere verden over fortsette å gi pengegaver til verdens rikeste mennesker for å ødelegge vårt felles miljø! Bare ved gradvis å avvikle vår oljeavhengighet og bygge opp en ny, miljøansvarlig økonomi kan vi sikre fremtidige generasjoner en reell mulighet for en lysere, mer dynamisk, renere og mer attraktiv framtid.
